Dissertation: Development of a Compensatory Method for In-Pit Ore Blending

This research developed a practical method to improve and stabilize the quality of iron ore in open-pit mining. It coordinates extraction, transport, stockpiling, blending, and processing into a single controlled system.

The work later became the foundation for a broader ore-quality management approach used in the concept of the “Super GOK” industrial complex.

Scientific and Industrial Application

The Super GOK concept was designed to combine three large open-pit mining operations linked to the Southern Mining and Processing Plant and the First and Second Novokryvorizky Mining and Processing Plants into one coordinated industrial system.

The goal was to manage mining, transportation, stockpiling, blending, processing, quality control, automated production management, and long-term planning as a single integrated process.

The project was included in the Five-Year Economic Development Plan of the USSR for 1991-1995. Boris N. Bankovsky served as the principal responsible executor, overseeing system design and planned implementation across participating enterprises.

The program was not implemented due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, which removed the centralized institutional structure required for execution.

STELS Underwater Turbine Technology

One of Boris N. Bankovsky’s principal areas of current technical research is the development of a new generation of underwater turbines based on the STELS technology concept.

The work focuses on scalable turbine systems designed to reduce hydrodynamic resistance and energy losses and to improve the conversion of persistent ocean-current energy into electricity.

The Gulf Stream represents a unique and powerful natural-energy resource passing through and near waters under United States jurisdiction. Unlike wave energy, which depends on changing wind and weather conditions, the Gulf Stream provides a substantially more continuous and predictable flow.

Ocean-current energy may therefore offer important advantages over wave, wind, and solar generation, which are inherently variable.

This continuous energy resource may support autonomous marine power systems and future ocean-based AI data centers while reducing dependence on extensive energy storage and backup generation.

Research, engineering development, calculations, comparative analysis, and preparation of the STELS technology for future intellectual-property protection are continuing.
